Climbing Lincoln's Steps: The African American Journey

Today, I'd like to spend some time on the book, Climbing Lincoln's Steps: The African American Journey by Suzanne Slade. This book touches on the history of African Americans from slavery to current day, an America where an African American man has served as President of the United States of America. If you don't have this book on hand to join in, there is a YouTube video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1eOq2P906U which shares a read aloud.

One of my biggest takeaways from this book was Marian Anderson. Marian eventually became a Goodwill Ambassador, sang at a Presidential Inauguration and during the March on Washington. There is a fascinating history around Marian, and I really think she deserves a larger spotlight than she gets.

If you would like to listen to the entire radio broadcast from 1939 when African American Opera singer Marian Anderson sang, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" from the Lincoln Memorial, visit this YouTube link from the United States National Archives:
